Moira Shire Council has axed funding that is critical to survival of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Visitor Information Centre (YMVIC).  Without this essential funding our centre will be forced to close down.

The current funding contract from council is ending soon.  The YMVIC is seeking to obtain as much support and signatures as possible so we can present to council at their next meeting.

There are thousands of tourists every year that walk through the doors of the Visitor Information Centre, looking for assistance and information about our town and community.  The communities and businesses of Yarrawonga Mulwala will be negatively impacted by the closure of the YMVIC.  We will lose major events that bring a high volume of visitors to our towns, like the Rod Run, EC Griffith Cup as well as others, which in turn will impact the local economy during off-peak season.

The information centre receives on average 5,000 walk-ins, 2,000 phone calls, 3,000 emails per month. Not just visitors but also the local community members needing to access various services.  In addition to dealing with the normal daily activities, our visitor centre team have performed the tasks as an emergency hotline over the years. More recently during the fires, COVID lockdowns and various border closure requirements, and they are still dealing with flood related Parks Victoria and Parks NSW issues. The centre processed some 2,000 COVID border passes for vulnerable residents during the pandemic, as we were the only facility that remained open 7 days a week. Providing this additional service was about protecting vulnerable people during difficult times.

YMVIC’s focus has always been to source and secure large events outside of the peak holiday period to maximise the economic contribution to the region.  Indirectly there is a huge economic boost in the greater Moira shire and neighbouring regions with visitors travelling through and around the area whether it be shopping, dining or taking advantage of accommodation and amenities.

It is important to recognise the significant influence the Yarrawonga Mulwala Visitor Information Centre has on our lives here in Yarrawonga Mulwala. The opportunity to speak directly to visitors and community members is part of our culture and the unique essence of our towns. Ongoing support from Council is critical for their survival.
